Transportation
Getting here may be half the fun, but
the Holland area's intermodal transportation network makes it
twice as easy.
I-196 is the primary road access in and out of the Holland area,
providing direct access to Chicago (146 miles) and Grand Rapids
(27 miles). Running north from Holland along the Lake Michigan
coastline is US-31, which links the city with Grand Haven (22
miles) and Muskegon (35 miles). M-45, just north of Holland, is an
east-west route between Lake Michigan and Grand Rapids. M-40 runs
southeast from Holland to Allegan, then heads to the state line.
Approximately
20 trucking firms provide area businesses with surface freight
services. Public transportation is
provided by the local taxi services and
the
greater Holland area’s public transit system, Macatawa Area
Express (MAX). MAX operates three fixed routes with buses
arriving at stops every 30 minutes as well as 24-hour advanced
reserved ride service. Adult one way fares are $1 for the fixed
route and $2 for reserved ride service. Seniors, ADA passengers
and children under 17 are half price. For schedules and
information, call (616) 355-1010 or visit
www.catchamax.org.
Intercity bus service is provided by Greyhound. The Padnos
Transportation Center in Holland provides travelers and commuters
with access to daily train service to Chicago and points in
between. CSX provides area businesses with convenient rail freight
service.
Two
major West Michigan airports, Gerald R. Ford International Airport
and Muskegon County Airport, offer commercial passenger air
service to destinations throughout the world. Tulip City Airport
in Holland provides a full range of professionally staffed
aviation services, including passenger charters and air freight
operations. Private pilots and corporate aircraft can also fly
into Park Township Airport.
Holland has access to commercial shipping through the Great
Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway System via Muskegon and Grand Haven.
Ports in those cities handle commodities such as aggregates, coal,
cement and road salt. River barge traffic on Lake Michigan
provides additional shipping options through Chicago. Lake
Macatawa's deep water docks and deep channel to Lake Michigan
makes Holland a favored port for pleasure boaters. |
