Shopping, Eating, Entertainment - It's the Place to Be!

 Downtown Events

Home to the Tulip Time festival, Dutch Winterfest, Fiesta, and Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival, Holland has yearly celebrations to commemorate its Dutch Heritage and multi-cultural composition.

Tulip Time, which is held annually in May, has been named the “Best Small Town Festival” by Reader’s Digest in 2004. During the festival, come and enjoy the tulips, parades, fireworks, and performances by Klompen dancers in authentic Dutch costume.

Dutch Winterfest is a two-week festival that extends from the end of November to early December. During the festival there is a parade of lights, holiday events, and even a visit from Sinterklaas. In celebration of Hispanic culture in the Holland area, the local Latin American’s United for Progress (LAUP) sponsors an annual Fiesta.

The Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival also honors Latino culture and heritage through art, film, and music.

There are also many seasonal events held in the downtown area. On Friday’s during the summer months there is a children’s concert series and an evening concert program. Street performers showcase their talents on Thursdays. The Farmer’s Market (shown above) and sidewalk sales provide different ways to shop downtown.

Shops and Restaurants

Downtown Holland’s beautiful Victorian architecture and heated sidewalks offers the perfect atmosphere for shopping at downtown stores or eating at one of the restaurants. The heated sidewalks make downtown walkways snow-free no matter what time of year!

With over 200 businesses and restaurants in downtown Holland’s Five Star shopping district, shoppers are sure to find what they are looking for. Operating hours for the downtown shops are Monday through Thursday and Saturday 10 am – 5:30 pm. During the week, a few stores offer extended hours until 9 pm. Friday’s operating hours are 10 am – 9 pm. The operating hours vary on Sundays.

Parks and Statues

Centennial Park is located downtown and provides a beautiful area to take a walk or rest for awhile. It is a 5.6 acre park with brick pathways, a pond, a fountain, and flowerbeds. This area, which had been originally set aside as Holland’s marketplace, was dedicated as a park in 1876 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the United States.

Throughout the city there are several decorative bronze statues. The city’s Dutch heritage is celebrated in the statue of Albertus C. Van Raalte located in Centennial Park and the Immigrants Statue of Kollen Park. The other statues depict varying scenes from Benjamin Franklin sitting on a park bench studying a copy of the constitution to a couple enjoying their time together and a Valentine’s Day card. Additional information concerning the history and details of the statues can be found at http://www.holland.org/index.pl?paID=292.
