The Macatawa Area Express Transportation Authority (MAX) has added a new bus stop in downtown Zeeland to replace the Route 8 bus stop that was closed on E. Main St. in front of Public restaurant last week. The new bus stop will be located on Cherry St. east of Elm St. in front of Zeeland City Hall. It is served by Route 8-Zeeland, and will arrive at: 30 every hour. The new stop is less than 1/10 of a mile from the original bus stop. MAX closed the popular downtown Zeeland bus stop on Main St. east of State St. last week after the restaurant erected a fenced in area for dining on the sidewalk that extended to the curb. Passengers waiting for the bus at the stop in front of the restaurant would have been forced to stand and wait on a narrow curb on the street. MAX closed the stop because it was unsafe and was inaccessible to persons with wheelchairs or walkers. MAX also announced detours on Route 2-Butternut/136th due to road construction and closure between 136th at Butternut and James St. Construction is expected to be completed in August. Passengers using Route 2 with origins or destinations along 136th are advised to contact MAX Customer Service at 355-1010 for route detours or stop locations. Passenger advisories also are posted on MAX’s website at www.catchamax.org.
